Lister style diesel engines ?
Slow speed diesels are an important component of reliable, long lasting energy
systems.
Small Portable generators from a department store can replace part of a household
load during an electrical outage. They can also be used to charge
battery banks during stormy or overcast conditions where solar panels fall
short, however these units are
typically loud, hard to move, run on gasoline, and are
meant for short duty cycles. Most smaller portable units run at high speeds
(3600 rpm) and are constructed of light materials to facilitate
portability.
For this reason the lifespan of portable gasoline generators is typically much shorter than a
comparable unit powered by a diesel engine of the same speed.
Slow speed diesels are a step above the rest and are typically the choice of
serious micro-energy producers. These engines run between 650 and
1000 rpm and are very fuel efficient. They typically outlast their high speed cousins by a factor of
10 ! They are built heavier, meant for long duration
run times, and are built to provide reliable power for many, many
